OUR STORY
Literacy Council York-Simcoe (LCYS) was formed in 1984 by a group of passionate volunteers who were dedicated to helping those experiencing difficulty in reading, writing, and working with numbers.

In 1987, LCYS was incorporated as a non-profit charitable organization and obtained funding from the provincial government. That same year, LCYS opened a small office in Newmarket and hired its first staff member.

Since then, LCYS has obtained funding from a variety of government and community funders to enhance programming for hundreds of adult students per year.
In 2018, the Skills Upgrading Centre name was created to better identify the array of programs and services we provide.

Today, with a small staff and dedicated volunteers, Skills Upgrading Centre – LCYS continues to improve lives through learning in York Region-Simcoe.
