OUR STORY
Literacy Council York-Simcoe (LCYS) was formed in 1984 by a group of passionate volunteers who were dedicated to helping those experiencing difficulty in reading, writing, and working with numbers.

In 1987, LCYS was incorporated as a non-profit charitable organization and obtained funding from the provincial government. That same year, LCYS opened a small office in Newmarket and hired its first staff member.

LCYS has since obtained funding from a variety of government and community funders to enhance programming for more than 300 adult students per year.

Today, with a small staff and 15 dedicated volunteers, Skills Upgrading Centre – LCYS continues to improve lives in York Region and Bradford West Gwillimbury through education, participation, and empowerment.
